Abstract

The application of a rotating mosaic crystal as slow neutron monochromator and chopper in connection with a time-of-flight spectrometer for inelastic neutron scattering measurements in condensed matter is discussed. Effects unique to this monochromating technique, e.g. the Doppler effect and neutron storage effects are described quantitatively. Several resolution functions describing the performance of this type of spectrometer are given. Using the derived relations finally a reference design of a possible high resolution double spectrometer is outlined.
