Abstract

The complex surroundings at intersections are an enormous challenge for future driver assistance systems. Conventional development methods characterized by a bottom-up approach have the risk of not tapping the full potential of active safety systems in these complex surroundings. In this paper, a goal-oriented, top-down approach is introduced. In this approach, possible assistance systems and the required situation analysis are derived from real accident data. After that, requirements for possible sensor systems are deduced. The example system that is introduced is effective against a category of accidents that was identified in the accident analysis. In this category, the driver passes a stop sign without decreasing speed, apparently because he or she misinterpreted the right-of-way. The Stop Sign - Violation Warning application recognizes this mistake and warns the driver in time for him or her to stop.
