Supramolecular polymers for growth of 1-D ordered thin films under ultra-high vacuum

Abstract

A new technique to grow 1D ordered organic thin films, based on linear supramolecular polymers and oblique incidence organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD), is presented. Solid state N nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) indicate the formation of linear and extended supramolecular polymers. Multilayer films are also grown on glass substrates and studied the average molecular direction of the films by second harmonic generation experiments, revealing that the direction is parallel to the projection of the obliquely incident molecular beam on the substrate surface.
