Soft Mode Sound Velocity in High Magnetic Fields as a Method to Study Structures in the Electronic Density of States

Abstract

The martensitic transformation in high-temperature superconductors of the A-15 type (A3B compounds) is commonly explained by a strong coupling of tetragonal shear strains to quasi one-dimensional-electrons.1Here we report on the magnetic field dependence of the soft mode sound velocity of several V3Si samples, thereby extending previous measurements.2 The sound velocity changes quadratically with field: V(T, H) - V(T, O) = a(T) • tf2, where the function a(T) depends sensitively on the details of the electronic structure near Ep3 The use of fields up to 15 Tesla will enable us to test various models for the lattice instability. It is found that a sharp peak in the electronic density of states at EFwith a characteristic half-width of 120 K is consistent with our data4.
