Abstract
Technology assessment studies have often addressed technology as a "neutral" subject evolving independently of its societal context, with the result that the consequences of technological applications were conceived in an overly simplistic way. Our study proposes an alternative approach, based in the social sciences and addressing technology as embedded in specific socio-cultural and historical contexts.
