Simulator and flight tests on aerospace plane long-period control and flying qualities

Abstract

The flying qualities issues related to the long-period dynamics of hypersonic flight are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the effect of aperiodic phugoid and height mode instabilities. Simulation experiments are used to obtain pilot ratings based on the Cooper Harper scale. Flight tests using a SR-71 aircraft have been conducted to validate results from the hypersonic simulation research on long-term dynamics effects on flying qualities. It is shown that longitudinal dynamics of the SR-71 aircraft and the hypersonic vehicle simulation modeling are comparable.
