title = "Simulation of pure sedimentation of raindrops using quadrature method of moments",
abstract = "The quadrature method of moments (QMOM) is used for simulation of pure sedimentation of raindrops in a one-dimensional rainshaft. The moments have been calculated in three ways, based either on droplet diameter using two and three nodes or on droplet volume using two nodes. The method gives useful information on the range of sizes and also on spatial segregation of the droplets. The results show that all three methods give useful information about the transport processes involved and compare satisfactorily with the spectral (bin) method although use of diameter as internal coordinate is preferable from the viewpoint of quantitative agreement.",

note = "Funding Information: This work was carried out when one author (AM) was at TU M{\"u}nchen on Humboldt Fellowship for Experienced Researchers. Financial support from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and hospitality of Lehrstuhl f{\"u}r Thermodynamik, TU M{\"u}nchen to AM and financial support of Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) (project PO710/9 within SPP METSTROEM ) to GJ are gratefully acknowledged. Discussions with Dr. Ulrike Wacker (AWI Bremerhaven) and Prof. Klaus Beheng (KIT) were most fruitful. The authors are thankful to Mr. Joao Carneiro for helpful discussions and the reviewers for several suggestions for modification of the manuscript. AM is also grateful to Jadavpur University for granting him leave during the period.",
