Abstract

Although inertia friction welding is a well established manufacturing method, the processes taking place during the welding are only partly described. Nevertheless the evolution of temperature and stress fields in the welding partners are essential quantities to judge the existence of microstructural transformation, premature damages and the quality of the weld. As the strong thermomechanical interactions in the weld zone disqualify analytical calculation, numerical methods have to be used to provide an insight into the welding partners during the welding process. The current work expands a model prepared by ABAQUS in multiple points, to get a better physics-based modeling approach of the inertia welding process. Implementation of a new friction model as well as the integration of forced convection boundary conditions are the main topics. Afterwards the results obtained with the improved model are compared with experimental results to judge the quality of the simulation.
