Abstract
Maternal and fetal morbidity parameters were collected from a low-risk collective (Bavarian Workgroup for Quality Control) consisting of 296,916 spontaneous deliveries and 14,883 elective cesarean sections. The short-term maternal morbidity after elective cesarean section (sectio on demand) is relatively low. Most discrepancies between both collectives were found regarding the rate of placental problems post partum which occurred significantly less frequently in the primary cesarean section group due to the possibility of active management. However, in the neonates, mainly pulmonary adaptation problems occurred more often. The long-term morbidity of a cesarean section with a higher occurrence of placenta accreta/increta with corresponding bleeding risks is not relevant for most of our patients considering the reduced childbirth rates.
