Abstract

Catalytic transfer hydrogenations are essential chemical reactions for the production of a variety of fine chemicals. Ru(II) compounds are the most studied transition metals for this type of catalysis. This review deals in particular with Ru(II) based catalysts containing phosphane-functionalized NHC-ligands. Despite the otherwise widespread application of these multidentate systems as ligands in catalysis, Ru-catalyzed homogeneous transfer hydrogenations with such ligands have not yet been examined in great detail, in contrast to the predominant amine-functionalized NHC ligand systems. This review covers Ru(II) phosphane-functionalized NHC (pre)catalysts and their development, starting from complexes with monodentate imidazol-2-ylidene-NHC and abnormal imidazolylidene-NHC ligands to double substituted ruthenium complexes with two abnormally coordinating NHC ligands. The latter include the most active Ru-NHC complexes known in catalytic TH of the benchmark substrate acetophenone with TOF50% values up to 600,000 h−1.
