Abstract
Keratinocytes represent the major part of resident cells in the epidermis where they form the barrier which protects the body from harmful substances. Evidence is compelling that keratinocytes are more than cells which are responsible for the structural and physical integrity of the skin. They rather take part in the defense of microorganisms and they are involved in innate and adaptive immunity. Immune reactions in the skin depend on the communication of keratinocytes with their environment. Via secretion of cytokines, chemokines and the expression of surface molecules keratinocytes actively influence and regulate eczematous reactions.
