Abstract
The importance of electric urban mobility in recent years has been marked by a race toward micro mobility, where e-scooters provide a new way for residents to move throughout their communities. E-scooters are an increasingly important part of city transit and mobility systems. E-scooters cover first and last mile mobility solutions. Therefore, we need to better understand the benefits, challenges and opportunities of this urban transportation mode. This chapter aims to explore the specificities of e-scooters and the aspects surrounding it. It is important to understand how e-scooters interact through the different parameters and what connects them in different ways. E-scooters are new and their lack of research, development and testing has led to worldwide safety concerns. Additionally, we also outline the implications these transport systems have on both equity and social trajectories. To conclude, we discuss several considerations that concern the future of e-scooters and propose recommendations for this new trend.
