Abstract

The reproducibility of measurements is a problem which recurs constantly in the application of isokinetic systems and especially in electromyography, but which is frequently ignored. Many scientific studies which address the repetitiveness of measuring methods are, moreover, incorrectly interpreted, usually due to a confusing correlation coefficient. For this reason, this study determined the reproducibility of isokinetic measuring methods in the hip joint and the reproducibility of EMG signals (surface EMG) of the surrounding mm. gluteus medius and adductor magnus according to the statistical method described by Bland and Altmann. In this study, 15 woman and men between 45 and 68 years of age underwent isometric, concentric and eccentric muscle exercise in a test-retest procedure using isokinetic LIDO-ACTIVE equipment. The results of this study show generally satisfactory reproducibility of strength measurements with isokinetic equipment; adequate reproducibility in isometric muscle exercise for extension, abduction and adduction; in concentric mode for extension and abduction; in eccentric mode for extension movements. The reproducibility of EMG signais during strength measurements must be rated unsatisfactory, since adequate reproducibility is given only in abduction/adduction movements in concentric mode. Typical difficulties are the fixation and position of the probands, especially the electrode application and procedure of normalization for the EMG.
