Abstract
Recent development work on railway track for high speeds is reviewed. The use of a rail with a wider foot is suggested; this would make it possible to simplify the fastening system for a ballastless track. The use of rail pads with a better resiliency for the conventional ballasted track is also advocated. Further research work should be done into the behaviour of ballast under high speed trains.
