Abstract
Raman microscopy was applied for the investigation of size-resolved atmospheric aerosol particles and discrimination of soot and humic-like substances in samples, as well as the changes in structure and reactivity of soot upon oxidation and gasification by O2. Absorption of pulsed or modulated optical radiation by the aerosols led to warming of the particle and the surrounding gas atmosphere. The resulting expansion of the gas atmosphere led to the formation of pressure waves, which can be detected by means of a microphone. The photoacoustic signal is directly proportional to the absorbed light power.
