ACKNOWLEDGEMENT This work was supported by NSF Condensed Matter Theory grant DMR 8122004 and INT 8402918. We wish to acknowledge helpful conversations with Raghu Raghavan. We are also indebted to William Skocpol and Tony Levi for pointing out the importance of the four-lead problem, and to the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge for its hospitality during the preparation of this manuscript.

N2 - In RF nanoelectronics and mesoscopic electronics quantum effects play a role on the circuit and system level. In this work a quantum electrodynamics based circuit theory is introduced that allows to establish quantum mechanical models of distributed circuits. Based on the Hamiltonian description of the Foster equivalent circuits a quantization of the equivalent circuits is performed. The quantum mechanical interaction of the modes via nonlinear elements is discussed. A DC-pumped Josephson parametric amplifier is treated quantum mechanically.
