Abstract
In this paper, interphases between PEI and a commercial epoxy resin for aerospace applications are investigated. The core of the study is the analysis of the interphase formation and structure as a function of different curing cycles. Furthermore, the structural integrity of the interphase is characterized by the interlaminar energy release rate in mode I and II as well as by nanoindentation measurements. It was shown that both the structure and the mechanical properties of the interphase strongly depend on the curing cycle of the epoxy resin system. The high plasticity of the thermoplastic-rich interphase leads to a high property level of the composite already at low heating rates.
