abstract = "A method is presented for efficiently describing the capabilities of the physical layer in a MIMO communication system. Such a description is required in systems that determine the optimum operation point based on information exchange between layers. We characterize the physical layer by means of efficient MSE tuples. Such efficient tuples are found by sampling the boundary of the MSE region. A particularly simple sampling algorithm is derived. We show how the distance between subsequent samples can be directly controlled, allowing us to provide a characterization of the physical layer that is both compact and representative.",
