Abstract
Photodesorption induced by soft X-rays (Al K alpha , Bremsstrahlung up to 12 keV) on stainless steel, polycrystalline W, and W(110) surfaces was investigated in a uhv system. The ionic desorption products were detected in a quadrupole mass spectrometer before, during and after various cleaning and adsorption procedures. For certain samples of stainless steel, photodesorption of Na** plus and K** plus , besides some other ions, was found, with intenstities strongly depending on pretreatment. For W(poly as well as (110)), photodesorption of H** plus and O** plus were found from different adsorption layers; again intensities were strongly influenced by pretreatments. Absolute desorption probabilities up to some 10** minus **3 ions/photon were observed. In preliminary experiments, a neutral desorption product (H//2 from W) was found.
