Abstract

Detecting surroundings with radar sensors in future autonomous vehicle applications makes new innovations necessary. Linearly polarized radar systems do not detect precisely and the quality of their data is low. Therefore, new approaches for obtaining more target information have to be analyzed, the most promising of which is the use of circular polarimetry. The design of these imaging radars requires certain criteria in the developing phase. In this article, the most important parameters are discussed, including typical radar design parameters such as range gate size and angular resolution as well as the most important polarimetric antenna parameter, cross polarization discrimination. The influences of these design parameters are shown in detail with an actual polarimetric radar image and analyzed signal properties.
