After being a member of the Hitler youth, Egon Gundermann was summoned, in the summer of 1943, to enter the « work service », in which he served as an « assistant in the Air Force ». At the time, he was 17. A year later, in September 1944, he happened to be enrolled in the armoured infantry on the Lorraine front-line. He fell back with the German army and was taken a prisoner in the Heidelberg district in March 1945. After staying in several camps, he was sent, in December 1946, to the Meuse department to work on a farm.
