Abstract

Osteotomies around the knee in patients with varus malalignment are commonly used combined with cartilage repair procedures. Malalignment plays a crucial role in the development and hence in the treatment of cartilage defects, since the mechanical alignment of the lower extremity has a great impact on joint loading. Malalignment is an important risk factor for failure of cartilage repair procedures. With the aim of creating optimal biomechanical conditions for the induced or transplanted repair tissue, unloading osteotomies should be part of the standard therapy in cartilage surgery of varus knees.
