Abstract

The present work describes a methodology for optimizing the design of the boost inductor for three-level bridgeless PFC rectifiers. Accurate theoretical methods for estimating winding and core losses were employed. The calculations make use of core parameters that can be found on magnetic core datasheets. A software was developed to automate the design execution for a list of candidate cores, while minimizing winding losses and allowing the designer to search for the lowest core size that fulfils the design requirements. The overall design algorithm is summarized and provides a systematic method for designing the ac-side inductor for boost-type PFC converters. Experimental results are presented focusing on the temperature rise of a inductor designed with the proposed procedure.
