Abstract
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a contentious issue in environmental medicine. Patients report subjective intolerance of small doses of common chemicals. The aetiology of this syndrome is controversial. Current literature favours a psychogenic hypothesis, grouping MCS among somatoform disorders. Paediatric patients appear to be rare. We present the case of a 13-year-old girl with long-standing manifold complaints. Irrespective of all evidence pointing towards a psychosomatic disorder, the symptoms were attributed to chemical intolerances and a diagnosis of MCS was made.
