Abstract

The importance of flexible membrane structures for use in aerospace applications has grown in the last decades, because of their high potential to mass savings compared to conventional concepts. To reach optimal performance of these kind of structures, such as maximized payload, minimized total mass or good system performance, considerable efforts must be put into multidisciplinary modeling approaches. In particular, membrane deformations have a high impact on the system performance, which makes them the major design driver of membrane structures in aerospace applications. Based on two aerospace examples, these dependencies of membrane deformations on system performance are presented in this paper. These examples are an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) hybrid airship structure and a direct radiating array (DRA) membrane space radar antenna structure.
