Modeling, Design, and Characterization of a 78.5 GHz Dual-Polarized Planar Antenna Array Consisting of Series-Parallel Fed Patch Antenna Sub-Arrays

Abstract

The modeling and design process of a dual-linearly polarized microstrip patch antenna sub-array column for around 78.5 GHz consisting of 10 radiating elements is discussed and evaluated based on the measurements of fabricated prototype antennas. The magnitude and phase distribution of a single antenna array column is evaluated by simulation. Results of an antenna array comprising three antenna array columns for digital-beamforming applications are also discussed. A multiple-input multiple-output time-division radar scheme is necessary for unambiguous grating-lobe-free operation because of the rather large array column distance. A very good polarization purity, reduced sidelobe-levels in both antenna cuts, and the applicability in digital-beamforming multiple-input multiple-output radar systems are key properties of the antenna array and its sub-array columns.
