Abstract

A controls degradation scenario concerning blocking of a body flap is investigated for a reentry vehicle. For coping with this problem, the reaction control system is considered as a means to generate control moments in combination with the aerodynamic control surfaces still operative. An optimization technique was applied to minimize the propellant required by the reaction control system. The results show that, depending on the considered scenario, the constraints in angle of attack and heat load have a significant effect on the required propellant. A further effect is due to the landing area which is to be reached.
