N2 - Methyltrioxorhenium(VII) (MTO), known as an efficient olefin epoxidation catalyst, also catalyses the oxidation of metal carbonyls by hydrogen peroxide. Thus, treatment of the metal carbonyl precursor (η5-C5Me5)Re(CO)3 with H2O2 in the presence of catalytic amounts of MTO at temperatures ranging between -40 and 25°C gives trioxo(η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhenium(VII) in almost quantitative isolated yield. Mild reaction conditions and high yields are the particular advantages of the new synthesis.
