N2 - Large-scale blackouts with a long duration have serious impacts on society and can easily reach the dimension of a national crisis. Stable local island power systems, established and operated in the distribution grid and energized by the locally available population of decentralised power units can supply at the least the most critical consumers and thereby decrease the potential damage of large-scale blackouts immensely. This paper introduces the concept of these local island power systems.
