Abstract

Currently the value of laparoscopic surgery in the curative management of malignant gastrointestinal tumors still has to be considered critically. In palliative treatment, however, the laparoscopic approach may offer some particular advantages in comparison to the conventional technique. Since the principles of oncologic radicality are no longer valid in these cases, perioperative morbidity and the time in hospital can be reduced. Suitable and sufficiently standardized laparoscopic procedures are available for gastrostomy, gastroenterostomy, jejunal feeding catheters, deviation procedures and enterostomies. The preliminary clinical results let these laparoscopic operations appear to be a recommendable alternative to conventional interventions.
