The quantification of ecological factors and relations may be an important contribution to fulfill demands concerning natural ecology within the field of regional policy. Methods analysing the utilization of regions proved to be very useful here. The planning of non-built-up areas (Freiraumplanung) has been looked upon again and again under the aspect of in how far the woodland is acceptable when aesthetical factors of the landscape are predominant. Polls in various recreation areas in agglomeration showed that the evaluation of the woodland proportion under the aspects of recreation and town planning (homing environment-Wohnumfeld) is much higher than we assumed up to now (with minimum values of 30-40%, optimum values of 50-60%, and maximum values of 80-90%). A comparison (throughout the whole year) of recreational values of woodland types, which are most important in forestry proved that leaf-wood types were surprisingly less favoured than spruce-, spruce/fir/beech-, and pine- forests. The preference for spruce-forests is remarkable, but this preference only applies to woodland types with natural rejuvenation or gradual structures. The (planted) spruce monotype is usually rejected. Thus, the great influence of forest-culture management upon people's preference for certain woodland types becomes obvious.
