Abstract
This review is the second of three parts (first part Z Herz Thorax Gefäßchir 22:204-211) intended to describe congenital cardiac surgery mainly to cardiac surgeons in preparation for their boards. The physiology of selected congenital heart defects is elucidated together with the background for treatment. In addition symptoms, natural history, indication for surgery, surgical techniques, characteristic morphology and results are discussed. Whereas part one focused on "simple" defects with straightforward repair, this section describes more complex lesions which often require a more thorough preoperative assessment together with complicated surgical management. In general, a two-ventricle repair can be achieved. Focus is on tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, anomalous origin of the left coronary artery, and left ventricular outflow tract obstructions.
