abstract = "The hydrogen evolution reaction on copper, silver and gold electrodes is investigated in a wide range of temperatures (appr. 130 to 300 K). Straight Tafel lines are found on copper and silver and also on gold except for an intermediate temperature range. The transfer coefficients are found to be strongly temperature dependent. Activation energies are only weakly potential dependent while the frequency factors increase exponentially with overpotential. A formal analysis of the transfer coefficient reveals major contributions of entropic terms. This is supported by the finding of potential dependent frequency factors.",
