Abstract

The intermixing of donor and acceptor materials in bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells can lead to islands of one material completely embedded in the other. This might have influence on charge carrier dynamics because the inclusions act as trap states. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations offer a powerful method to investigate such effects considering a realistic blend morphology. We compare real blend Monte Carlo simulations to drift-diffusion simulations with an effective medium approximation and give a justification for this assumption by evaluating the local charge densities.
