abstract = "This paper presents a different approach to the usual design of electrical systems used in the automotive industry. In contrast to the common way of realizing a car's electrical system as a linear bus, the idea of implementing a ring bus structure is described. Driven by recent developments in the field of autonomous driving, high safety standards will have to be fulfilled in coming car generations. As a result, topics such as energy management and energy availability represent key aspects in future car design. The presented ring bus system is therefore complemented with a series of highly Integrated Smart Distribution Devices (ISDDs) which will further provide a highly available power supply for safety-critical electrical loads.",
