Abstract

The synergistic use of passive (by bend-twist coupling) and active (by individual blade pitch control) load mitigation technologies is shown to allow for significant load reductions on wind turbines. It is found that, since the passive and active control solutions have opposite effects on the actuator duty cycle, such synergistic load mitigation does not come at the cost of more effort on the pitch system.
