Abstract

Guidance technology seems to be one of the most challenging principles for solving problems and requirements of agricultural machinery in future. A full range of new systems appeared, ranging from simple navigational aids up to fully automated field robots. The technology differs considerably in functionality, accuracy, reliability and therefore cost/benefit ratio. Simple navigational aids nomially use a Global Positioning System (GPS) sensor with differential correction (DGPS). More advanced systems often use additional sensors like inertial guidance technology for dead reckoning and roll and pitch compensation. Only limited infomiatlon Is available on influencing parameters under typical and often difficult agricultural field conditions. This paper points out fundamental considerations about quality of wort( and potential sources of enor in different environments. A general analysis of influencing factors of ail types of guidance systems points out limitations, but also provides important informatkm for potential system advancements, investigations on factors like the position sensor, geometrical inten-eiations and the topology were done. Especially fbr topological influences, a conrectlon algorithm was developed and introduced.
