Abstract

Interstitial free (IF) sheet steels are used for complex shaped parts because of their excellent formability. If a deep drawn part is subjected to a impact deformation at low temperature brittle fracture of the part may occur. This phenomenon is called secondary work embrittlement (SWE). One possibility to characterize this material/structural behavior is the drop-weight test. The result of this test is a temperature at and below which a crack can initiated in a deep drawn part under the investigated set of parameters. This paper addresses the influence of the preforming process on the susceptibility of IF steels to SWE.
