Abstract

The effects of thermal oil ageing on pitting lifetime was studied. The pitting life time decreased significantly for gears running at severe thermal conditions. With high operating oil temperatures, the actual bulk temperatures and the actual oil film thickness values showed a dominating influence on pitting life time. The oil ageing effect on the life time of gears caused by high operational temperatures and long exposure times played a minor role - especially in the case of synthetic oils. For synthetic oils, an increasing endurance strength by a lower mean coefficient of friction was observed 11 m along the path of contact. Reference test results with a mineral oil were in very good accordance with the predicted pitting life due to high gear bulk temperatures and the expected oil ageing effect.
