Abstract

The reliability of electric drives is a significant topic in safety-critical applications. Approaches such as multi-phase machines are widely discussed. Additional fault detection and control in a fault scenario are essential in such systems. In support of these efforts, this publication shall exhibit the influence of the resistance and number of shorted turns on the current and torque behavior of a nine-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine. Two distinct effects are to be observed, dubbed as active and passive. Their influence on current and torque is shown using 2D finite element analysis simulation data.
