Abstract

Operational modal analysis is used instead of the classical modal analysis where it is difficult or impossible to control an ambient excitation of the large or complex structures. Since the modal parameters are directly influenced by the physical properties of the structures, OMA has been performed to detect damage by using sensors mounted in pre-defined locations. However, it is impossible to detect the spatial locations of damages for wind turbine blades due to a limited number of the sensors used. In this paper, a prototype of a self-tracking continuous scanning laser Doppler Vibrometer (CSLDV) is developed for the tracking of the time-varying scan path on the rotating structure. Harmonic power spectrum method is extended to be applied on the periodic scanning measurement of the LTP systems. The damage localization of the blade can be done by detecting the abrupt change in curvature of the mode shapes. A test rig with a small wind turbine is presented for which the proposed measurement and analysis methods are evaluated.
