Abstract
Brainstem hemorrhage is a neurological emergency. Early and correct recognition, appropriate emergency treatment considering typical complications and the allocation to appropriate diagnostics and treatment are crucial for the functional outcome. Etiology, symptoms, typical complications and initial diagnostics of brainstem hemorrhage will be discussed. Erroneously prognosis is thought to be poor, but good functional recovery is possible as illustrated by 2 case histories. Possible reasons for this negative prognostic estimation will be discussed as well as the hereby resulting consequences on communication with relatives and on preclinical and clinical emergency therapy.
