Abstract
Frequency discrimination for pure tones was measured by an adjustment procedure as well as a yes/no procedure. Eight subjects with normal hearing took part in the experiments. Test tone frequencies of 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz and test tone durations of 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 ms were used. The results for the frequency differences limens are expressed in critical bands. In this representation, frequency discrimination depends only little on test tone frequency. For a decrease in test tone duration by a factor of 10 from 100 ms to 10 ms, the difference limen increases by a factor of 5 for the adjustment procedure and by a factor of 10 for the yes/no procedure.
