Abstract

This paper presents a finite set model predictive control (FS-MPC) for a novel split-capacitor active neutral point clamped (SC-ANPC) inverter with different voltage levels operating modes. The proposed topology requires only seven unidirectional switches, one four-quadrant switch, one dc source, and two flying capacitors (FCs) to generate a nine-level output voltage, which is considered a significant reduction in the active and passive components compared to other nine-level topologies. With the proposed improved FS-MPC (I-FS-MPC), the SC-ANPC can be operated in three modes; nine-, seven-, and five-level operating modes. Moreover, in fault condition of the four-quadrant switch, the I-FS-MPC is able to guarantee a continuous operation of the SC-ANPC with seven-or five-level mode, achieving a strong FCs balance in all operating modes. One of the prominent features of the SC-ANPC with its developed I-FS-MPC is the capability to cover the operation of the well-known conventional five-level ANPC (5L-ANPC). The proposed inverter topology with the I-FS-MPC is validated in MATLAB/Simulink environment.
