Abstract

This paper presents the design of two different kinds of passive filters (L and LCL filters) for a grid-connected cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter and the classical two level inverter for battery energy storage systems. Two design methods are proposed. The first method is based on the allowed current ripple in the filter's inductor while the second method is based on an iterative design algorithm. The performance of the proposed filters is investigated via simulation results using MATLAB® and Simulink ®. The individual harmonic levels of the output current and the total harmonic distortion for each case are calculated, compared and analyzed.
