Abstract
This paper reviews presently used models for predicting the strength of materials reinforced by continuous fibres and its scatter. Additionally, simple approaches like the linear rule of mixtures and global load sharing are discussed. The techniques for measuring input parameters needed for the modelling procedure, i.e. the strength distribution of the fibres and the fibre/matrix interfacial strength, as well as for measuring the strength distribution of the composite are described. The efficiency and the restrictions of the models are discussed. An approach allowing the assumption-free prediction of the strength of continuous fibre reinforced composites using experimental data for the mechanical behaviour of the matrix and the fibres is mentioned which makes possible the extrapolation to large parts and low fracture probabilities.
