N2 - A parametric study is conducted with the FEM and a visco-hypoplastic constitutive equation for the description of the mechanical behaviour of soft soils, in order to identify the relevant quantities leading to critical deflections (buckling) of an auger during the installation of sand-cement columns. It is concluded that the buckling load of an auger (or a pile-like structure) depends strongly on the magnitude and shape of the initial geometrical imperfections and the stiffness of the soil. The use of the undrained shear strength to judge the stability of slender pile-like structures in soft soils, as e.g. recommended by Eurocode 7, appears to be physically questionable.
