Abstract

Interval fields for boundary conditions is a method that models uncertainties in boundary conditions of a component in component-based crash simulation models. The uncertainties account for uncertain deformation of the adjacent structure to the component. These uncertainties affect the crash performance of the component. The method identifies the bounds of system response quantities of the simulation model. The objective of this paper is to validate bounds that are predicted using the interval field framework. The results of a component simulation model with uncertain BCs are compared with the results of a reference model. A detailed FEM model of the adjacent structure exists in the reference model. Additionally, parameters that are necessary for the definition of interval valued boundary conditions are determined based on the reference model. The case study in this paper shows that the effect of uncertain BCs on crash performance of the component can be realistically estimated using the interval field framework.
