N2 - Hop production in Germany's Hallertau region involves complex processes consuming significant energy. Field cultivation requires 9847 MJ per hectare annually. Harvesting demands 1037 MJ of electricity and 27799 MJ of heating oil per hectare for drying. An additional 857 MJ of electricity is used for drying plants, and 107 MJ for packaging. Irrigation adds 1300 MJ of electrical energy per hectare yearly. Potential energy savings lie in workflow optimization, modernized harvesting technologies, and more efficient drying methods. Emerging concepts like photovoltaics, hydrogen storage, biogas, and methane storage aim to further reduce energy consumption and promote renewable energy use.
