Abstract

The structure of cathode electrode plays an important role in PEM fuel cell to enable the maximum utilization of the electrocatalyst and achieve the maximum power density under both dry and wet operating conditions. A theoretical model has indicated that an electrode with a higher ionomer concentration close to the proton electrolyte membrane than the outer side of the electrode is beneficial for dry operating conditions without sacrificing the performance under wet operating conditions. A series of electrodes with different profiles of ionomer to carbon ratio across the electrode thickness have been prepared and evaluated under various fuel cell testing conditions. The electrode fabrication method and the structure impact on fuel cell performance will be discussed.
